My review is actually for Single Origin Coffee rather than the food part of Short Cake. I went here hearing that it was a great place with some experts in the industry trying a new gig. Sort of hard to find, but it was worth the endeavor.
First off, they use Verve coffee. I work across the street from them, been to their roastery, and acquainted with many of their staff. They make a good product, but I still dont get how their coffee is everywhere. Anyway, I have often said that places like bitter sweet in SJ make better espresso drinks then Sight Glass even though they use SG’s beans. I would say the same for S.O. I have had many caps from Verve and for whatever reason, the texture, over all flavor, and balance of my cap from S.O. was outstanding. I was especially impressed with how well balanced the espresso and milk were together; neither aspect overpowered the other. Very mild and yet unique enough to make it stand out as a “well rounded” cap in comparison to other third wave shops.
The barista was very friendly, knowledgeable, open to chit chat with me about Santa Cruz and coffee in general. A really good guy and represented his shop well. The place was quaint, not too hip, welcoming, not elitist. I really liked that. It was a little pricey but these guys really make a great drink.
Great experience and adventure, go check them out if you are in the area.
I liked:
- The knowledgeable staff
- Professional demeanor
- Simple, straightforward, well done items
- The lack of “third wave attitude”
- The great balance of espresso/milk ratio
